Letter grades are assigned using a point system according to the following table.

Points are assigned based on (a) participation in class and (b) homework. Participation in class consists of in-class discussions and in-class problem solving. 100 points of class participation are available throughout the semester. Homework consists of solutions to end-of-chapter problems from the textbook. Regular homework is due by the end of the Tuesday class. Extra homework can be turned in during any class. Ten points are available for each problem completely solved. Homework scores are based on the correctness of the solution and on the logic and clarity of the writing. The basic guidance to receive full credit is that the solution submitted must be understandable of and by itself to someone knowledgable in the subject without any need to consult the text of the problem or guess the calculation and reasoning.
Cheating of any kind on homework or exams is a very serious violation of University rules and is unethical. Students caught cheating will receive a failing grade for the course and will be sent on to the University Disciplinary Committee for further action.
